A Tools Overview

I love tools that make my life easier. There are many open source software tools for windows that you can use to help you. There are a few that are free but not open source. And there are some that are commercial but I would be reluctant to give up. I'll try to concentrate on the open source tools, but try not to be upset if there are other tools described here.

jEdit Home

As I was saying, jEdit is nice cross-platform Programmer's text editor. I use if for quick regular expression processing of text files. I use it for other things as well but regular expressions are something few windows programs support.

User Defined Language

One of the things I like about Notepad++ is that it is easy to define a basic word highlighting format. Notepad++ comes with standard color coded text highlighting for a variety of languages and files types, as does jEdit and other programmers editors. Many other editors also allow you to define your own languages. But the process is fairly easy for Notepad++. Why would you want to do this?

Download WinSCP

WinSCP is a Windows FTP client. This is what you use when you have a lot of files to transfer to you web server or need to copy backup of your site to your home computer. WinSCP is my favorite FTP client for Windows. It is free, open sourced software. However, you may prefer FileZilla, another free open source FTP client.

Zip Archive Manager

Do you use an unlicensed copy of WinZip whose free trial expired long ago but still runs as Nag Ware? If you really like the software, pay for it. Thank you.

Did you know there is an open source archive manager that you can use legally for free? No trial mode, no nag screens. If you don't want to pay for WinZip or another commercial product use 7Zip. It is highly rated. I use it. Find a download link to current version at the Zip site.
