File Manager

The File Manager can be found in the BlueHost control panel.

The BlueHost control panel includes a File Manager which includes a number of file functions useful for managing your site. These functions include:

  • The ability to rename, copy, move or delete files.
  • An FTP client that allows you to upload files to directories on your account.
  • The ability to change the permissions of directories and files.
  • An archive functions that allows you to create a compressed archive of some or all of your site files.

WARNING

If you do not feel confident in working on your site with the File Manager, PLEASE have someone with the appropriate experience do the work for you. Accidentally deleting, moving or renaming a critical file or directory, or changing the permission on a file or directory could cause your site to stop functioning. Backup Files

The File Manager is used to create a compressed archive of your site.

  • Login to the BlueHost Control Panel.
  • Open the File Manager
  • Choose the directory to browse.
    • You probably want your document root.
    • Uncheck “Show hidden files” to simplify the directory listing.

  • The File Manager will display display:
    • a tool bar with buttons for functions across the top.
    • a tree list of directories and files (on left)
    • and on the right, a detailed view of the directories and files selected from the left column.

  • Choose the directory you want to backup. This is usually the public_html directory where you website files live. Select (click on) the directory in the left column that will show the directory you want to backup in a list on the right column.
  • Check the check box next to the Directory to be backed up. Then click on the Compress button from the toolbar.

  • From the compression dialog box
    • Choose the type of compression desired. Gziped Tar Archive is a good choice for your site. However, a standard zip archive may be preferable if you want or need Windows compatability.
    • You can use the default name for the archive (will be filled in) or give the archive a name of your choosing. There should be no spaces in the file name.
    • Click on the Compress File(s) button to begin compression.

Restore Files

Restoring an archive is similar to creating one.

  • Using the File Manager browse to the archive file.
  • Select it from the right hand File Manager list.
  • Click on the Extract button from the toolbar.

Offline Storage

It is good practice to save a copy of your backup files at another location in addition to on your website. To download an archive onto your home computer, use an FTP client or use the File Manager copy the archive. You can also use an FTP client or the File Manager to upload a backup you wish to restore.
